Native to Australia, the wombat is a short-legged marsupial found in forested, mountainous, heathland areas of southern and easter Australia, as well as Tasmania and a small region in Queensland.
The word wombat comes from the Dharug language of the Dharug people of western Sydney.
They are the only Australian marsupial to have a backward facing pouch (so it doesn't fill with dirt), and they are mostly nocturnal.
Fun fact: In 2020, biologists discovered that wombats, like many other Australian marsupials, display bio-fluorescence under ultraviolet light!
