The magnificent Wedge-tailed Eagle (Bunjil) is the largest bird of prey on the Australian continent, with a wing span of up to almost 3 meters! They have adapted to live in a variety of environments such as desert plains, mountainous regions as well as rainforests. However, their preferred terrain includes variety such as rocky outcrops, open terrain and wooded areas.
Fledglings can roam up to 200km's a day from their hatching site, giving the bird not only new territory to hunt in, but biodiversity to the species. Initially seen as a pest, allegedly hunting farmers livestock, the Wedge-tailed Eagle's numbers have rebounded higher than pre-colonialist times!
In indigenous culture they are a creator deity, culture hero and ancestral being.
