The Grey Headed Flying Fox is the largest bat in Australia, but that doesn't detract from their cute little faces!
They are endemic to the forests east of the Great Dividing Range from Bundaberg in Queensland to Geelong in Victoria, with small pockets both higher north and in South Australia. Did you know that their wing span can reach up to 1 meter?!
Once abundant, numbers of Grey Headed Flying Foxes dropped dramatically between 1989 to 1999, with an estimated population of just under 600 000 in 2019. This decline is due to habitat loss, temperature changes and competition with the Black Flying Fox.
Thankfully there are many conservation efforts and federal protections in place to help save our cute little friend!
