The Willie Wagtail is the largest of the Australian fantails.
This bird is distinguished from other similar-sized black and white birds by its black throat, white eyebrows and whisker marks. The name wagtail stems from the constant sideways wagging of the birds tail.
Young birds resemble the adults, but have paler, slightly rusty edges to the feathers of the wings.
In some indigenous cultures, the Willie Wagtail is seen as a warner of danger, a 'guardian angel' if you like. This playful creature is found throughout Australia except in Tasmania.
I have always loved watching them in the back yard, with their distinctive dance!
